“Wait, furniture needs to be certified?”

That’s right!

While it isn’t mandatory for office furniture to be certified, it’s something you should be aware of if you’re in the market for an electric sit-stand desk.

Compared to standard office desks, electric standing desks are:

• More mechanically complex
• Have lots of moving parts
• Feature electrical wiring and hydraulic motors

Unlike a traditional desk where you only have to worry about weight capacity and your ability to follow assembly instructions, electric height adjustable desks are considerably more complex.

It’s because of this added complexity that standing desks can carry a certification – we’ve seen first-hand the consequences of choosing cheap, uncertified standing desks from overseas – the result is computers, monitors, and laptops that come crashing down when mechanics fail.

If the height adjustable standing desk you’re looking at carries AFRDI certification, that means that you can be confident in its weight capacity, durability, its sturdiness and more.

While certification is optional for most types of furniture (there’s no law saying you need to buy a certified product), it’s strongly recommended to choose products that have the AFRDI sticker on them.

In the long run, it’s well worth it!

Introducing Furntech-AFRDI

Now that we’ve explained that furniture can be certified, it’s time to introduce the body responsible for said certification.

Operating out of the University of Tasmania, Furntech AFRDI (Australasian Furnishing Research & Development Institute) is an independent, non-profit organisation that focuses on:

• Creating standards for office furniture
• Performing product testing
• Certifying many types of furniture products
• Informing buyers

In short, its job is to ensure that you have a safe and ergonomic working environment by ensuring that the furniture you’re buying for your office is fit-for purpose, safe to use and durable.

On top of electric height adjustable desks, they certify a wide range of other types of office furniture including chairs, filing cabinets, monitor arms, shelving, keyboards and more.

They even cover a wide range of furniture found in the home such as beds, cots and more. 

Interestingly, they’re also in charge of setting Australian standards for leather in furniture!

Is stable

The last thing you want is for your desk to tip over – not only is it a sign that your desk is of poor quality, but it can also cause injury and seriously damage computer equipment!

As part of the testing process, desks (including standing desks) are tested for stability and strength. They’ll be tested for weight capacity and other safety features.

Is consistent

The last thing you want when you unpack your desk is finding that it’s actually smaller (or larger) than the product description says it is!

As part of AFRDI testing, desks and frames are checked for size to ensure that each one is consistent, and that you’re getting exactly what you’re paying for.

It sounds pretty minor, but it’s an important thing to think of, especially if office space is tight!

Is strong and tough

One of the things Furntech-AFRDI does is help create the standards that govern office furniture in Australia.

And as part of that, they also set out what materials are suitable for use.

During the certification process, they’ll look at what materials a desk is made of, taking note of whether the desk uses stronger materials than prescribed.
