This allows consumers to focus on creating an inviting and comfortable workspace,” Swick explained. He added that customers are seeking tranquility in their home offices, which can be achieved through aesthetic elements such as lighter finishes and curves.
Echoing Swick’s sentiments, Chuck Auten, vice president of merchandising for Century Furniture, noted that as the need for large equipment and printed materials diminishes, so does the demand for bulky storage. Auten stated that the company has shifted its focus to decorative writing desks that can double as home office furniture. “Our best-selling products for home offices are writing desks that we design with an artistic flair using mixed media. These pieces are elegant enough to be placed in the living room or even serve as a bedside table,” he said.
However, not all suppliers agree with this aesthetics-first approach. AspenHome and BDI, for instance, emphasize the importance of functionality. Dave Adams, BDI’s vice president of marketing, stated that customers often underestimate the importance of smart office furniture until they start shopping. “A well-designed office desk considers factors such as cable management, keyboard drawers, file storage, and supply organization. These elements create an efficient workspace that inspires creativity and makes working enjoyable,” Adams said.
A spokesperson from AspenHome also stressed the rise in demand for functional designs, storage solutions, and multipurpose work surfaces. “Sales of door bookcases, mini files on castors, and workstation/combo file have skyrocketed to cater to consumers’ needs,” the spokesperson said. They added that consumers are looking for compact office furniture that can fit in any room of the home. “Products like writing desks or lift-top workstations with an attached file cabinet are ideal for these consumers. Modular configurations are perfect for multiple people working at the same time.”
