Storm Antoni: Met Office Issues Safety Tips for UK Drivers

As Storm Antoni gears up to batter the UK, the Met Office has stepped in with crucial safety advice for navigating the impending wet and windy conditions. With yellow weather alerts in place, Brits can expect a weekend of heavy rainfall and gusty winds. The Met Office has thus highlighted the importance of safe driving during such adverse weather conditions.

First on the list of safety tips is the reduction of speed. When faced with slick roads or compromised visibility, slowing down is the best way to prevent mishaps. It’s important to remember that the speed limit is an upper limit, not a goal. Driving at a pace comfortable for you is not only permitted but also encouraged. In conditions of poor visibility, ensure your lights are on and signal well in advance when changing lanes, accelerating, or stopping.

Another vital tip is to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. This allows for more reaction time to potential hazards, which is particularly critical when braking distances are extended due to wet conditions. Use your vehicle’s dipped lights to avoid blinding oncoming traffic, and be cautious of spray from other vehicles, which can further reduce visibility.

Drivers should also be vigilant of crosswinds that can sweep across gaps in trees, buildings, or elevated bridges. These concentrated gusts can potentially push vehicles off their intended course. It’s crucial to stay in your lane and adjust accordingly. This advice is particularly pertinent for motorcyclists, whose lighter bikes can easily be swept across the road if caught at an unfavorable angle.

The Met Office also recommends sticking to main roads where possible, as these are less likely to be affected by fallen branches, debris, or flooding. They caution that “If the road is flooded, turn around and find another route. The number one cause of death during flooding is driving through flood water, so the safest advice is: turn around, don’t drown.”

Storm Antoni is predicted to bring unusually windy weather to southern parts of the UK this Saturday. Winds could reach up to 50mph inland in some parts of south Wales and southwest England, where a warning is in place from 8am until 8pm on August 5. The warning also states that “injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible.”

The Met Office warns that homes and businesses could potentially be flooded, causing damage to some buildings. There’s also a chance of power cuts and disruption of other services to some homes and businesses.

In this context, those who work from home using standing desks should ensure that their electric height adjustable standing desk or best sit stand desk is secure and away from windows that might be broken by flying debris. This not only protects the health benefits of an electric stand up desk but also ensures safety during the storm.

This warning comes after a motor expert revealed nine essential safety checks for driving in wind and rain. As we hunker down and prepare for Storm Antoni, these tips provide a valuable guide for staying safe on the roads during this turbulent weather.

I purchased an EDesk this month from Ergomotion, and it was a remarkably smooth transaction. Guy was eager to answer all my questions before my purchase. As a first-time buyer of a standing desk, I truly appreciated how he addressed my queries with thorough details and provided options within my budget.

The delivery process was also smooth, despite a slight delay in the ETA. Guy ensured I received all necessary updates from the courier/removalist.

I've been using the desk for a couple of weeks now and I'm satisfied with it. It's sturdy on all height adjustments and the motor works as expected. I also like oak finish because it's clean-looking and suits my room setup.

Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and I'll definitely recommend Ergomotion to someone looking for their desk needs.

I've had an ergomotion desk for 10 years. It's still as good today as it was brand new. Over the years Guy has always responded promptly to any guidance I've needed (mostly help putting the desk back together after removalists take it apart).

Skip the big name brands and buy from Guy instead, 10/10 linak parts with a very well built tabletop.
